EMAIL SERVICES NEWSFLASH!
We are pleased to announce that improvements to the email services include:

For Netscape:
Click edit, mail & news, then scroll to the "outgoing smtp" at the bottom
of the let menu, then check "use name & password". Type the username
without the @config.com (although we plan to make this an obsolete error),
then check the remember password when it asks the first time around.
2. Virus scanning has been turned on for all outgoing email sent or received using our six new currently in operation MX and SMTP.CONFIG.COM servers and the pop3 and imap server wil no longer accept email from anyone but will solely store subscriber email for reading using all available email protocols!
3. SpamAssassin levels have been raised before being tagged as spam! We have already started removing many of our static filter strings in favor of the bayeasian scoring system!
Yet more SMTP Authenication info: Please do not turn SPA or SSL on! SPA is Microsoft protocol for their windows login and there is nothing secure about it;^) SSL is for secure communications involving data encryption transmission and is planned but not yet implemented. You may set this to "use if available".A little more information as to why we are moving toward SMTP authenication may be read at URLs:i
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/spam/secureyourserver/index.htm
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/smtp-auth.html

Google search for SMTP Authentication
. A couple important reasons include: No more forged headers from non-existant users on our domain servers for viruses and spam.
Joe Jobs from our network will be hard to perform and easier to prove didn't come from our servers unless the user was authenticated! Our subscribers may now access and send their email from anywhere, on any network in the World, without having to ask the Network Admin for permission!.

Dig is now Microsoft A+ certifiable, opps certified;^)
It's official! Dig, passed his Microsoft A+ certification! Dig has been providing support for config.com for about three years and we are proud to now have his experience certified by MS, as we always knew he was certifiable;^) Dig offers a 12 point Internet tune-up for $39.95 and also does computer repair for our subscribers, when he's not on the support telephone!
Virus scanning is now on all mail servers for all hosted domains:
During the past month, config.com was introduced to a new consultant (Kelley Reynolds) who was one of two people responsible for integrating financial institutions within the Federal Reserve email system!
We've upgrade several servers, implemented several addditional secondary Mail Exchange (MX) records, and installed virus scanning on all incoming email!
We'll still always recommend running a virus scanning on the subscriber side as new viruses are invented daily.
The great news is that our modem access subscribers won't be forced to transmit viruses while they are trying to get legitimate email, thus making the email and overall network system much faster!
We are looking forward to Kelley helping us implement other new and exciting features of our email system to reach for our goal of maintaining one of the finest full-service email systems available!
$1,000,000 Ancient Chinese Paperweight update:
Yesterday, I was contacted by a representive of the Chinese government who is on the mission of aquiring Chinese artifacts of historical value for their Country!
We've hosted a web site and have exposed the artifacts for over 8 years at URL: http://www.config.com/antiques/chinese/paperweight/ with the goal of selling the items for a former Portage County resident to help raise funding for the establishment of our GlobalPeace.Net non-profit dream with the commission!
While we can't count our chickens yet, we are optismistic that once authenticated, the Country of China through the purchase of these artifacts will give us the opportunity to realize our dream of establishing a foundation to disseminate information toward achieving Global Peace utilizing the Internet!
SpamAssassin is available:
We have been making great progress toward implementing and tuning SpamAssassin (The Bayesian
scoring filtering system) to help limit the amount of spam coming into our servers.
I'm in the process of removing many of the former "static string filters" which are more likely to cause false positives, so if you should be effected by a previous filter which hasn't been removed, please contact me, so that it may be brought to my attention for potential removal.
I plan to leave filters that are unique to child porn, and other popular (or unpopular) spam topics, and look forward the discovery of strings that may still effect legitimate email traffic for removal! I believe I got most of the questionable strings over the last couple of weeks, but an ounce of precaution, never hurts!
While we do not presently automatically install custom configurations for every subscriber, we will upon request!
If you are having a spam or other email problem, please feel free to contact me.
4th of July holiday weekend:
Have an enjoyable and safe 4th of July holiday! I'm in the process of moving to the house next door at 246 South Meridian Street, Ravenna, Ohio and will be having a pot-luck barbecue party on the 4th of July, around 3pm - 11pm, if anyone cares to stop by to meet your favorite Network Administrator.
Should anyone have an issue or otherwise need to contact me during holidays or non-business hours, please feel free to telephone (330.296.2356) me at home ;^)

The infamous SMTP-Timeout ISSUE IS RESOLVED!
Mr. William Traxler, who connects to config from about 60 miles North of the Mall of America in Minneapolis on our Qwest leased network pointed out to me that we were missing A and PTR DNS records for imap.config.com and pop3.config.com! I had resolved the GlobalPops huntgroup radius request and corrected an error in the routing tables that was certainly contributing to the problem, but still didn't completely work properly. Upon Bill's suggestion I quickly changed the DNS and he sent a message to me that said to the effect "Don't touch a thing, it's working!" (and several others, from different networks) that I verified IP's as being leased, and decided to make this announcement to update the network users effected. I vote Mr Traxler, Hero of the month!
I'm grateful for the several people who've contributed to my full time research and work these past several weeks, and apoligize for not having found resolution sooner! I do believe much positive was gained out of this issue. Missing commas, Microsoft carrage returns within a UNIX file;^), spaces where tabs should have been, additional Ascend-Data-Filters, heavy reviews of all DNS and MX files, and the new RADIUS.config.com server I'd referred to earlier, which consultants and I can now focus on configuring!
Team config will continue to work hard toward improving the quality of your network experience, and I'm also grateful for their handling of the additional support and attempts at personal service throughout unfortunate crisis! We do indeed care about maintaining a high quality of our modern communications services and the value to emergency management services throughout America!

ICG circuit email timeouts
Wed May 5 22:19:58 EDT 2004 SMTP-Timout update:
Due to the growing inquiries, I wanted to update those effected as to the current status of affairs!
Today, for the first time since the issue started we verified several successful smtp transmissions. However, we've also proved failures with the same users.
Yesterday, in a discussion with GlobalPops regarding the Ascend filters, we were asked to create another huntgroup for them with minimum data-filters, which we have not yet completed. We still belive the core of the problem lies with the different Ascend Data-Filters required by Level3 (formerly ICG circuits and modems) and Qwest mostly.
What we done so far includes:
verified DNS settings and confirmed no abnormal or otherwise errors that would effect mail in any regard, according to http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=config.com
also confirming assorted mail/MX/DNS/SMTP/RBL tests available at URL:http://www.dnsstuff.com
We are continuing to work on the issue and are becoming optimistic we have a shot at getting one of the networks working real soon. It is possible that commercial software may have to be purchased to achieve our current needs with multiple networks and their access servers to resolve the issue with all of our available leased networks.
We have also been trying to change the orders of the Ascend filters in the users file which forces us to reboot the radius server. Unfortunately, this indeed causes log-in timeouts and password errors for those trying to log in or surf the web. We are trying hard to keep this to a minimum, but it becomes necessary, and today, I forgot a comma, which caused login and surfing problems for several minites before calls started coming in. This is why we moved forward with getting the new radius server up asap...
I am monitoring the timouts which are being logged, for both success and failures to further research IP setting comparasions in both the mail server and the radius server... I do continue to apologize for the issue which has become one of the longest I've experienced and will continue to work toward a resolution to the end, for better or worse!
Fri Apr 23 16:16:52 EDT 2004 Ascend filter SMTP-Timout update:First I apoligize for the lenght of time (7 Days) that has passed since the SMTP timeout issue was discovered! I just received a response to the Level3 question regarding the Qwest Ascend-Data-Filters that I had to pass last year at URL:http://lists.cistron.nl/pipermail/cistron-radius/2004-April/005891.html which i'm actively working on!
The answer appears to be simple and in some regard, I'm glad the author mentioned "kind of ugly", as all of the clients IP's (Hundreds) have to be separated via network. I'll need to restart the radius server after all of this is completed. I expect this will take a couple of hours and I'll check email to joe@config.com for any comment pro or con toward how soon to reboot. When I rebooted last night around 1am, it took about an hour to recycle due to the huge number of Network Access Server (NAS) we can dial-in to. I'm leaning toward waiting to midnight depending on how many are on-line toward 3am, unless I hear strong comments towards rebooting ASAP.
Some good has come out of this experience! I've never before received a complete list of NAS's of any network we lease. I now have a complete list of our new Level3 network. Also, our Business Manager John McFarland, has approved the purchase of yet another server toward acheiving our goal of a dedicated server per protocol. The new radius.config.com server will allow us to reboot without effect to subscribers in the future and provide redundant and load balancing service for future long term growth and compliment the relay.config.com, ns1.config.com, & frontpage.config.com our team recently added.
The entire team@config.com appreciates your patience and understanding and of course, I'm trying to remain your favorite network administrator;^)
END UPDATE
We have had a few reports of smtp timeouts which appear to be isolated to the ICG migration to the Level 3 network and have been looking for a radius Ascend filter issue most of the day.
We will continue to work on the issue and can recommend several potential solutions or options which include:
https://home.config.com:20000
www.mail2web.com
You may also try to dial in on a different network other than Level3 or ICG. The modem numbers available to you may be checked at URL:

We have also created a email issues form which may be used to report trouble or implement features at URL:

Outlawing spam
It is my pleasure to share an article published today titled "Outlawing spam" in Crains Business Magazine written by Tom Jackson. The article is at URL:http://neohio.craintech.com/cgi-bin/article.pl?articleId=3714 and blurps my involvement with the Ohio ISP's.
It doesn't mention however, that I also sit on the spam legislation committee for both the OISPA.ORG and was invited by Representative Kathleen Walcher to sit on her HB 383 committee along with 4 other Ohio ISP's, cauce.org, AOL, Microsoft and a few interested Non-ISP parties ;^)
A tidbit of information of interest to our local Portage County communities, is that the former Vice President of Government Affairs for AOL and current legal counsel for government issues is also involved in the Ohio spam HB 383 with Rep. Kathleen Walcher and attended Kent State during the 70's.

The ICG network has been sold to Level 3! We are preparing to migrate the ICG network to Level3 and complete the required testing ASAP.
All config.com subscribers currently using ICG modem telephone numbers will most likely need to change to another network ASAP. Your other network options are available by check ing your area code and prefix at URL: ISP POP locator for config.com
The order of network choices we recommend include:
1. config.com Ameritech circuits
2. GlobalPops (GP)
3. Level 3
4. Qwest
However, by all means, you are encouraged to use the network that gives you the best connection! We pay more for network redundancy, that we might offer you a choice, and performan
ce is the best choice;^)
We expect the Level 3 purchase of ICG to benefit config.com by expanding our National availability of modem numbers and quality of dial-in circuits!
Level 3 was the first modem wholesaler to upgrade to the current v92 and v44 protocols and they have a reputation for being among the highest quality circuit providers.
We will be updating our config.com Internet software with the new numbers ASAP. Until the update is completed the telephone numbers may be added using the support agent.

config.com Network management email fraud!
It has just been brought to my attention that an email was received by one of our subscribers regarding a subject: Notify about using the e-mail account
THIS WAS NOT SENT OUT BY THE CONFIG.COM MANAGEMENT! DO NOT OPEN IT OR THE ATTACHED ZIP FILE!!!
The body of the message includes:
Dear user, the management of Config.com mailing system wants to let you know that,
Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled because of unauthorized access.
Please, read the attach for further details.
Attached file is protected with the password for security reasons.
Password is 52053.
Sincerely,
The Config.com team http://www.config.com
The config.com team has never had occassion to email attached password protected files to our users! We are researching this fraud for further information and evidence which of course will be presented to the appropiate legal authorities!
UPDATE I've temporaryly blocked all zip archive email attachments due to this incident and apoligize, but feel strongly it's either a new virus or someone trying to cause harm to our network or subscribers systems! Anyone having copies of this correspondance is encouraged not to open it, or delete it, but rather contact this network administrator any time of the day or night! I'd rather have a false alarm than damaged network subscriber, and frankly, I'd love to help catch the idiot involved! My home telephone number is 330.296.2356 and if during business hours my office number is 330.297.9595 ext 228.
Food for thought: There is absolutely no reason a network administrator of an ISP would want or need to send a password protected file to a subscriber!

The Sprint T-1 is having problems
We have been seeing the Sprint circuit which we use for our broadband wireless subscribers exclusivly, go up and down intermittently.
We have a trouble ticket with them to determine if a switch might be going bad, or otherwise narrow the problem down.
We apoligize to those this effects and are working toward resolution.

MyDoom virus update
Well, we are pleased to share that 24 hours into the MyDoom virus news, we were already blocking it! Today's logs shows thousands daily being blocked. Just because we do our best to block viruses, you still are encouraged to run a scanner on your own system. We've seen a steady flow of members with virus issues! If you need to buy a virus scanner, then we'd like to point you to the config.com on-line store.

Skip Watson, an Akron ISP, recently lost his battle with health
I just learned that a friend of mine and of the company config.com, Inc. has recently passed away. Skip Watson, was a network administrator for the oldest operating ISP in Summit county, Ald.Net! Skip also served as a consultant for config.com, to implement services like email, domain registration, and web hosting on FreeBSD UNIX to better serve the Portage county, Ohio community.
While Skip could have easily refused consulting to help establish a competitive ISP next door, he was community oriented and always welcomed the opportunity to help his Portage county neighbor!
Skip Watson was a good man, a great neighbor, and made a difference for the many of us who have enjoyed the benefits of his computer and networking skills! His loss will be felt greatly, and our hearts and prayers are with his loved ones.
A breaved peer,
Joe Rinehart

config.com network enhancement report
I've wanted to install and implement a list-server (organized and personalized mailing list) for a long time to better facilitate network announcements, Internet support information, important events, community news, and to otherwise improve the services available to our commercial hosting clients! The Mailman software we decided on is the same which is used by many respected companies and allows subscribers to opt-in or opt-out, and is otherwise full featured.
It's finally arrived and is now available at URL: http://lists.config.com/ for your review and participation!
We will be inviting all of our subscribers to sign-up for the Announcements list at bare minimum since this will allow us to notify you in the event of a problem via email, since many don't visit this home.config.com web page routinely! Other lists are available should you wish to participate or learn more of our various Internet and communication services.
config.com is also making the list-serve software available to any client, for public or private usage, for lists under 500 members as an additional hosting benefit. Lists larger than 500, will be available for a modest bandwidth and server maintenance fee, based on the size and traffic.
Best 'net regards,
Joe Rinehart, your favorite network administrator (most of the time;^)
