Mon Dec 23 20:38:32 EST 2002 UPDATE:
We experienced some RADIUS authenication problems this evening around 6pm. This time it was due to our modemports network having problems. In any regard, I removed the modemports network access servers from our RADIUS configuration and all is well again with the other networks. I'll check manually on the modem ports network and will add their network servers when their problem is resolved.
Sat Dec 14 12:24:01 EST 2002 UPDATE:We have been experiencing some problems with a new ICG remote access server in the Akron LATA! A trouble ticket was created on Friday with ICG but they haven't found the problem yet. The problem is related to the initial passing of the username and password to our RADIUS server. The username is being passed, but the passwords are not. ;^(
Fortunately, a couple options exist:
1. Go to findanisp.com or http://whypaymoreforless.com/ and get an alternate
dial-in number for your city. We are working on adding the over 8,000
new modem telephone numbers this weekend into our gearbox automatic update
software.
1a. You'll need to log-in using your username@config.com on the new modemports
network (MP) and username@config.com.1dial.com on the new American Alliance
of Service Providers Member network (AASPMN).
2. Keep trying until it hits a properly configured ICG Network Access
Server (NAS).
3. If you are a local Portage County subscriber, you can dial direct to
our network using the Ameritech circuits published on our local exchanges
page.
On other news: It was discovered yesterday that email didn't relay on the new networks. It turned out that the IP's associated had not been entered in our mail server access file. This was fixed yesterday afternoon.
As if having over 8,000 modem telephone numbers wasn't enough, in our attempt at establishing a redundant National network, we've are in the process of adding the Qwest National modem ports to our network. Qwest was choosen by us due to their commitment to rural communities in the West where they also serve as a telephone company. With the addition of the Qwest network, config.com will become the second largest ISP in America having the most modem numbers on a single Nationally redundant network.
Frankly, this wonderful news was the accidental effect of trying to acheive redundant choices of networks for our subscribers on a National basis! If one network is having a problem with connections to config.com service, our subscribers will be able to dial-in on another leased modem port on another network.
Oh yea, did we mention that we already have twice as many telephone numbers, most of which are in rural America, than AOL!
Thu Dec 5 17:19:16 EST 2002 UPDATE:The subscribers who are using our licensed software will be the first to have access to 2,790 modem ports across America that we've added on Dec 2nd!
We've also signed a contract today with the American Alliance of Service Providers to add another 5,507 modem ports within the next few days! We expect to have over 8,000 modem ports by Jan 1st 2003. You may check with http://www.findanisp.com or visit whypaymoreforless.com to see if we are available in your favorite city now.
We are now accepting checks electronically to make it easier for people
to pay in the Winter;^)
Due to National Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks that occurred on Monday, Oct 21, 02 and the same type of attack occured on our primary FNSI.net backbone on Thursday evening aroung 10:30pm so we decided to complete the upgrade of our hardware and software which we started a couple weeks ago.
On Friday, Oct 25th, we restored the first backup (dated Oct 11th) we found and had everything back up around 7pm. The mail server was down about 6 hours total time on Friday but our secondary was up, so bounced email was at a minimum.
On Saturday, Oct 26th, in tuning the mail server we ran into a problem with the mail.local file and finally resolved it around Sunday 5pm. The only email that was lost would have occured during stoping and restarting while working with the mail.local file. The mail.local program routes the mail to local users once it arrives via SMTP.
On Monday, Oct 27th, we came to work expecting to finish the web server portion of the upgrade, however, Murphy the lawyer (the one who wrote Murphy's Legal Dictionary), decided we hadn't had enough! About 9:30am we received a call from FNSI asking us if we had any issues with them because they couldn't ping our cisco router. A few minutes later, our monitoring company in the UK telephoned to inform us they could'nt monitor anything on the Fibernet side of our network.
I spent from around 9:30am to around 7:15pm on several conference calls with FNSI, Sprint, and ICG trying to set up static routing, and otherwise resolving the issue! Finally, at 7:15pm, FNSI, & ICG notified me in yest another conference call that Ameritech discovered when they rebuilt a defective sonaplex that went out earlier in the day, they accidently wired our circuit wrong! About 15 minutes later, all was well again!
Upon satisfaction that the network circuits were back up in better shape than before, I went to work getting the web server restored with help from Leo Wright until around midnight! We are now down to tuning some scripts and improving security issues.
On the positive side of things, we've improved our server daemon software and hardware throughout the ordeal and went from a 400Mhz with 256MB ram to a 1.4Ghz with over 1GB of ram and created a mean green FreeBSD spam and cyber terrorism fightin' machine!

NATIONAL ACCESS UPDATE:
It's official! The config.com network has been expanded to include over
400 cities throughout America!
While many Internet service providers (ISPs) charge extra for National access, config.com is maintaining the same competitive pricing!
Our National service is built into our new automated dial-up networking software, which is another reason for subscribers prior to August 1st 2002 to upgrade to our CD-ROM for a one time licensing fee of $10.00.

STORM 2002 UPDATE:
With the help of consultant Dick Depew, Phd. of Redpoll consulting and
Ald.Net Internet services (our friendly competitor;^) of Akron we were
guided in such a manner as to fully recover without data loss toward getting
the commercial server back on-line!
We will be adding yet another backup hard drive and making a couple of configuration changes that will improve the chances of this particular problem from occuring again. We apoligize for any inconvience and consider the Storm of 2002 officially behind us!
For all the improvements we've managed to make to our network since we started our ISP in July 1999, this storm has opened our eyes to the real possiblities that Act's of God are nothing to gamble with. The management is presently assessing our damages and preparing a disaster plan for the future, that our network may be a little better protected.

STORM 2002 UPDATE:
Ravenna, Ohio had a severe storm which caused an extended power outage
from about 4:30pm to around midnight last night!
Our battery backups ran as long as they could before service was interrupted. The network admin was in the building within 5 minutes of the power grid being restored and managed to get everything except the secure commercial server back up promptly.
It appears that the /backup partition on the commercial server has been corrupted which is effecting the kernel from booting up properly. I'm trying hard to stay focused on getting the commercial server up without doing any further damage and will not be able to take or return telephone calls until after this problem is resolved.
We have uploaded some digital images of the storm damage which is linked from http://www.ravennaohio.net/ .
Best 'net regards,
Joe Rinehart, your favorite network administrator (Most of the time;^)

National Access UPDATE:
WE are proud to announce that we've signed contracts to lease modem ports
Nationally with both ICG Communications and Broadwing Communications!
Config.Com will be in 29 of America's largest markets and over 200 cities by the end of August 2002. We've already started configuring and testing with successful ISDN and v.90 connections in Cincinatti, Ohio and Anaheim, California.
All of our Ravenna Ameritech circuits have already been reconfigured to automatically assign DNS servers which will not effect those whom have specified them in the past. Our mission is still to serve rural Portage county Ohio and to create a few jobs in the process. We believe that by providing National access, we'll benefit our existing subscriber base during vacations, winter retirements to Florida, traveling business persons, etc... while bringing revenue into our communities.
Wed Jul 31 23:24:02 EDT 2002 NEW CD-ROM
UPDATE:
ANNOUNCING: We
are now using the same licensed software that AT&T uses for
their dial-in services! The disc is available for only the $10.00 licensing fee to anyone that subscribed to config prior to Aug 1st 2002 that desires improved service, automated updates, and a backup! Call or stop in our beautiful new and improved office to purchase your copy today! |
Wed Jun 5 10:35:25 EDT 2002 E-Mail server UPDATE:
Tuesday morning, the SMTP mail server wasn't running. Around 9:30am we restarted the server and all has been well since.
It was brought to my attention that nothing was posted regarding the email server downtime, for which I apoligize. My excuse: Doing too many things at the same time, hence solved the problem and went back to what I was doing ;^)
Wed May 8 18:58:37 EDT 2002 Ameritech 330.298.3728 circuit UPDATE:
Yesterday, around 7pm we started to receive telephone calls reporting fast busy signals! Since we have more circuits than we need to handle our subscribers, we had to isolate any potential problem. Around 4pm today, the telephone calls reporting trouble started again today and I was able to establish a pattern worthy of filing a trouble ticket with Ameritech for each of our Ravenna circuits.
Around 6:30 pm, it was discovered that 3 channels of our 103 Ravenna circuit was "out of service" which would explain the fast busies on the latter two circuits. Upon restoring the circuits to "in service" status, all problems were solved!
Our billing policies web page at URL: http://support.config.com/faq/billing/ has been updated to reflect recent changes!
Hello Internet surfers!
On Monday 11:30 AM 4/15/02 the Config.Com, Inc. Vice President of Marketing, Terry Van Hoose contacted the Akron, Ohio office of Time Warner cable regarding advertising on their television channels.
Upon finding out that we were an ISP, Mr. Van Hoose was told, "We don't accept advertising from competition of our Road Runner service"!
Has anyone had a similar experience, or, has anyone successfully purchased advertising on Time Warner cable?
We thought the color of our money was the same as anyone else's in America!
Sunday, 21-Apr-2002 23:31:53 EDT Mantua Ameritech circuit UPDATE:
The weekend problems turned out to be due to a $2.00 network patch cable, and a faulty smartjack CSU/DSU signal. We replaced the cable and all started working much better, although we no longer have the telephone number of the last caller. We are keeping a close eye on the smartjack until 7pm tomorrow as a result.
We apoligize for not returning the hundred or so telephone calls to our office, but we hope that you understand that our time is better spent with Ameritech, our support contracts, and other technicians toward resolving any problem as promptly as possible!
config.com is now broadcastimg the Internet at speeds up to 3MB/s which is about 4 times faster than cable modems! We've started with a dedicated T-1 backbone connection to the Sprint network so any possibility of excess usage won't harm our dial in subscribers, but yet, if something should happen to our Fiber Network backbone, we can route all dial-in traffic via the Sprint backbone.
For information regarding broadband wireless visit URL: http://www.config.com/commercialservices/wireless/ or telephone our office.
We have found our home.config.com server under attack and are working on resolving the problem. The problem started around 6pm March 12th and is ongoing. These types of attacks are hard to trace, but should we succeed, we intend to report the activity to the Federal authorities!
UPDATE: The FBI visited us regarding several recent issues and all existing evidence was turned over to them!
We experienced some problems with the new v.92 protocol and had to reset the modems a couple of times today in Kent and Ravenna! We apologize for the inconvenience, but, V.92 IS WORKING NOW!
V.92 is now available on the Kent and Ravenna Ameritech circuits! To learn more about v.92 and if you qualify for a free upgrade, visit these recommended links:

On Sunday, I discovered that our log files filled up which caused some
grief, but fortunately, I was able to resolve the problem without much
hassle. I'll be writing a script to check the log files and to delete
them if they start to runaway again :^)

SBC - Ameritech 2002 Yellow Pages
We are easy to find... In Portage County, just look at the front cover of the telephone book. In Stark or Summit counties, just look for the green display ads in the Yellow pages under "Internet-On-Line Service Providers"! |
BroadBand WirelessOn Jan 22nd 2002 config.com is implementing broadband wireless in Portage County Ohio at speeds up to 3 Million Bytes per second which is about 4 times faster than cable access! Service will be available within a 7 to 12 mile radius of downtown Ravenna, Ohio using only the best BreezeCom equipment. Contact us for more information. Redundancy, RedundancyNot only do we serve more communities in Portage County than even the National's, but we've developed the most redundant network in Portage County! We buy our telephone lines from two different telephone company's so that if something happens to one, you'll still have another... As if that wasn't good enough for our subscribers, we just installed our second Internet T-1 backbone connection from Sprint to backup our Fiber Network Solutions Internet backbone! We are now among the fastest and most powerful networks in the Northeast Ohio region. |
Your favorite network administrator,

On Wednesday, 02-Jan-2002 about 10:30am, the problem with the Ameritech 330.298.3728 Ravenna data circuits have been resolved! The problem turned out to be that Ameritech had their National switch set with caller ID plus name... It's a good thing, we had redundant dial-in circuits with another telephone company (ICG) during this crisis or it would have been much worse.
The GREAT NEWS is:
On Jan 9th we are scheduled to install our second (redundant) T-1 data
circuit with Sprint Telephone Company. Now, if a network card blows up
on either of the two T-1 data connections, no one will experience any
down time ;^) We intend to become the only commercial redundant network
within Portage County and to also offer 3 MB/s Broadband wireless at speeds
of up to 4 times faster than cable access!
The GOOD NEWS is:
Well, as if the move wasn't stressful enough... Our voice lines didn't
get transferred by CoreComm on time. However, we were able to get an additional
telephone line (330.296.4859) installed within 24 hours by Ameritech.
So, we switched our local service back to Ameritech. Today, Ameritech
confirmed they will have our old lines install by next Monday. Now, we'll
be able to use the new fangled full featured telephone system we purchased
from AllTel. This new system is expected to resolve the problems we've
experienced due to explosive growth and having more lines than people.
;^)
